Microsoft FixIt Wizard for critical flaw in 100 applications
Sep 1st
Microsoft has released a software tool that helps system administrators protect PCs against a critical class of vulnerabilities found in more than 100 applications from a variety of software makers.
The FixIt Tool works only on machines that have already installed the workaround Microsoft published last week. The latest point-and-click release is designed to make the previous workaround easier to use and fine-tune a variety of settings that will ensure compatibility with applications such as Outlook 2002, members of the Microsoft Security Response Center said.
To apply the patch(s):
Visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2264107 - Download the update appropriate for your version of Windows. You will be required to reboot after installation. Apply Microsoft Fix it 50522 by selecting RUN when prompted. The FixIt will set the parameters added by the 2264107 for 100 apps while providing a safe setting for Outlook 2002 as outlined in the article.
Memphis PC Guy price increase
Aug 30th
Due to rising transportation and communication costs I am increasing my on-site price $10 per hour for Residential and Commercial clients. My average call length is currently 1.72 hours which equates to an average increase of $20 for the same fast, professional, on-site computer repair services.
When the recession began a few years ago, I wanted to do my part to ease the burden and introduced $25 per hour on-site computer repair services for residential clients. It has been a tremendous success and I wish to thank you all for your patronage. It is also nice to see that my little experiment has made a difference, as my competitors are still trying to justify their $75+ hour service charges.
I look forward to providing many more years of low-cost, on-site computer repair services in the Memphis, TN. and surrounding communities.

Trojan preying on out-of-date Java installations
Aug 22nd
Sunbelt Blog | August 20, 2010
A piece by Marian Radu on Microsoft’s Technet Blog is warning that users who have failed to update the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on their machines are vulnerable to drive-by downloads by a Trojan called Unruy. That Trojan has been associated with rogue security products. Radu said the vulnerability (which was patched in March) is being actively exploited.
Browsers running JRE versions up to version 6 update 18 are vulnerable. The current JRE version today is version 6, update 21.
Users can easily check their version of Java and download necessary updates here: »www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Comcast Updates to DOCSIS 2.0 in Memphis
Apr 28th
I noticed today that my modem is now synced at DOCSIS 2.0 which allows for faster speeds! So unless we are just lucky in Frayser, everyone should be enjoying faster download and upload speeds. My speeds went from 8.1Mbps/1.4Mbps to 18.1Mbps/2.2Mbps! Of course, that just means I’ll reach the 250Gb cap sooner but I’m not complaining… I’m glad to see Memphis finally getting the attention we deserve.
If you want to check your Comcast modem, simply point your browser to http://192.168.100.1/ and check CHANNEL TYPE. Should read DOCSIS 2.0 (ATDMA)
My ARRIS Cable Modem is only rated to DOCSIS 2.0 but with 80% of Comcast customers currently upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 I may now go ahead and purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 Modem, especially since they raised the rental fee from $3 to $5 per month.
Has your speed been updated? Leave a comment and let me know!
