Update July 2011: With 4 Channel downstream bonding Comcast is faster and better than ever! I now download at a constant 22.9mbps and upload at a constant 2.8Mbps! Modem rental rates do continue to climb however, so unless you are using Comcast’s Digital Phone, I suggest you purchase a Motorola 6120 Cable Modem and save the $7 per month rental fee. Just be sure to keep your receipt to dispute any accidental Modem rental fees in the future.

Of course, that just means I’ll reach the 250Gb cap sooner but I’m not complaining… I’m glad to see Memphis finally getting the attention we deserve.
If you want to check your Comcast modem, simply point your browser to http://192.168.100.1/ and check CHANNEL TYPE. Should read DOCSIS 2.0 (ATDMA)
My ARRIS Cable Modem is only rated to DOCSIS 2.0 but with 80% of Comcast customers currently upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 I may now go ahead and purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 Modem, especially since they raised the rental fee from $3 to $5 per month.
