Windows 11 Blue Screen Problems After Recent Updates — What You Need To Know (July 2026)

By Memphis PC Guy

If your Windows 11 computer has recently started showing the message “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart”, you’re not alone.
Over the past few months, I’ve seen a major increase in Windows 11 systems crashing, freezing, or rebooting after updates — even computers that were running perfectly fine before.

This isn’t random. It’s tied directly to Microsoft’s recent update cycle.
Below is a breakdown of what’s going on, why it’s happening, and what I do to fix it when I’m onsite with a client.

What’s Causing These Windows 11 Crashes?

1. Recent Windows Updates Are Causing System File Corruption

The June and July Windows 11 cumulative updates have been linked to:

  • Random blue screens
  • Sudden restarts
  • Black screens after login
  • BitLocker recovery prompts
  • Corrupted system files
  • Failed Secure Boot updates

These updates modify core Windows components. If the update fails mid‑process, Windows system files become corrupted — and the computer may crash repeatedly.

2. Secure Boot & TPM Updates Are Failing

Microsoft is pushing a “Secure Boot modernization” update. If your computer’s BIOS is outdated, Windows may repeatedly attempt to update Secure Boot and TPM components in the background.

This can cause:

  • TPM errors
  • Secure Boot update failures
  • Boot manager corruption
  • Repeated BSODs

This issue affects many HP, Dell, and Lenovo systems — desktops and laptops.

3. SFC and DISM Repairs Don’t Always Fix It

Normally, running:

sfc /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

will repair Windows. But right now, if corruption returns after reboot, it means the Windows component store itself is damaged. At that point, a full reinstall is the only reliable fix.

How I Fix These Windows 11 Blue Screen Issues

Step 1 — Check Event Viewer

I look for:

  • Kernel‑Power 41
  • BugCheck entries
  • TPM‑WMI errors
  • SecureBoot‑Update failures

These tell me exactly what caused the crash.

Step 2 — Check Windows Update History

If I see the June or July updates installed, I know what I’m dealing with.

Step 3 — Update the BIOS

This is the most important step.

A BIOS update fixes:

  • TPM provisioning
  • Secure Boot database issues
  • ACPI firmware conflicts

Once the BIOS is updated, Windows stops retrying the broken update.

Step 4 — Run SFC and DISM

If corruption is found once, I repair it.
If corruption returns after reboot, the system needs a reinstall.

Step 5 — Remove Problem Updates

Rolling back the June/July updates often stabilizes the machine.

Step 6 — Disable Fast Startup

This prevents Windows from loading corrupted boot data.

When a Reinstall Is Required

A reinstall is necessary if:

  • Corruption returns after reboot
  • TPM errors keep appearing
  • Secure Boot update fails repeatedly
  • Windows Update rollback fails
  • BSODs continue after BIOS update

At that point, reinstalling Windows is the fastest and most reliable fix.
I back up your data, reinstall Windows, update the BIOS, and apply stable updates only.
